I found this MacbookPro trackpad click fix trick in the comments to this video that shows how to fix it by taking your computer apart. Leave me a comment and let me know if it worked for you. Clay, Thanks a million for the “trick”! I was on my way to the Apple Store this morning (something I have been avoiding and dreading because besides the $, you have to go online and make an appointment blah, blah, blah), when I told myself I would go online the nth time to see what has been posted lately regarding this trackpad problem everybody seems to be having (I really hope Apple would pay attention to it because Apple’s standing/good reputation rests on quality and elegant product. This is not a “footnote” suggestion). When I read Clay’s suggestion, I just turned to my MacBook and tried it without reading other suggestions and comments; that’s how desperate I was. Needless to say it worked like a charm (if you believe in charms:-)).

But Clay (and those who have experienced this problem), what do you think is the root cause of the problem besides the battery? Just an update.Use CAUTION when applying pressure to your trackpad. If you push to hard you will crack it like I have done. Now I have to buy a new one and replace the old one.

It turned out that my trackpad issues were due to the battery needing replaced. When the battery get old it starts to swell, which places pressure on the trackpad making it not work properly. If I take out the battery it works perfect, just like a brand new MacBook. Try removing your battery and see if that is causing the problem before risking damaging your trackpad. Click on my name in the post to see a picture of the damage. For anyone thinking of trying this idea. Please note that the trackpad is glass.

The downward pressure should be applied evenly across the surface and no less than 4 places. I used two thumbs and two fingers. This fix worked temporarily for me and I finally needed a new battery. Yea Apple replaced it free out of warranty. The battery had swollen and expanded into the area where the trackpad needs to be when it is clicked on. It sure was frustrating not being able to click my trackpad.

Suggest you set up an appointment at the genius bar at the Apple store and as them if they will replace the battery for free like you read on the forums because it should not swell up as it ages. I recently just reformatted my Macbook pro and my trackpad stopped working after I logged in, I could see the mouse arrow moving around but I could not select by pressing the pad.

Mac

What eventually worked for me was 1st: Pressing hard on the trackpad and applying pressure all across the surface. 2nd: After pressing on the trackpad surface for a while I found out if I pressed hard enough I could select but it was a pain pressing the hell out of the pad just to make a selection so I went to “Preferences” and then selected “trackpad” and then selected “Tap to click” and it started to work like it use to, but I ended up having to use 3 fingers to select and drag.which was annoying as hell. So I went to “Preferences/Universal Access/Trackpad Options/ and select “Dragging”. Also try: Shutting down computer, plug it in, then start pressing Shift/control/option while pressing the power up button for 15 seconds and when you let go the light on your power cord connected to your Mac should go to green then back to orange, then power up your mac again. Also try: Command+Option+P+R while you power up your mac and wait til it chime 2wice then start up again. Hopes this helps.someone, I know how it is:confused. Military cac on a mac.
