Never had this happen until after I updated to OS Sierra 10.12. So that's why I figured it was a printer driver problem. After I read your message and learned that I had the latest driver version, I tried printing the photo with Preview and it worked. Exfat for mac and windows.

Did the steps you describe and also with support for Apple and HP and neither could resolve the issue. I am trying to scan wirelessly. So I decided to to try and connect it physcially via USB cable and resetting the print system. I then added the printer via the printer set up and was able to scan. Then I unplugged the printer reset the system again and added the printer via wireless this time and it worked. Hopefully this will help you and anyone else.
