You do have a point and I have thought of this but cannot live with these messages popping up every few minutes (and only if I move the machine ever so slightly)- I have also checked all connections with different hardware many times). I am willing to live with the check drive for errors but the format question is more dangerous than the possibility of corrupt data (at least as far as I'm concerned).

If I have to answer no to the format question 20 times a day sooner or later I will hit the wrong button. After which I will not have corrupted data I will have no data. I don't know if there is a follow up question 'are you sure you want to reformat the drive' because I have never answered yes. This message is just too dangerous and I have to resolve it.
