Oaky, here's my problem. Longtime windows user picked up a mac for something different. I have hundreds on movies and clips burned to discs. They are all dvd files that I burned to dvd's. Basically, I have made compilation dvd's of my favourite movie scenes on one disc, kind of like the super clips you find on youtube except I made them on dvd.

Action, comedy etc. All files that are on these dvd discs were taken from dvd's. There are no exotic files of any kind. I used dvdshrink on a windows desktop PC running windows XP to make these discs.

Anyway, I have a macbook pro now and have all these movies/clips on dvd discs that I want to watch on my mac so I downloaded the latest version of the VLC player in which to watch them because the mac won't recognize the file if it was saved using a windows based system. I don't want to use my mac dvd player because I'm looking to transfer all my dvd discs onto a hard drive to watch from and I don't want to burn out my mac dvd player transferring hundreds of discs over to a portable hard drive. I'm going to use my windows based PC to transfer files over to a thumb drive and then to my mac and/or a portable drive.

So, I have noticed that all of my movie files have multiple files in them, the VOB file especially seeing as how that's where the video is.example: when I open a folder I see this: VIDEO_TS.BUP VIDEO_TS.IFO VTS_01_0.BUP VTS_01_0.IFO VTS_01_1.VOB VTS_01_2.VOB If I were to open the VTS_01_1.VOB file on my windows PC running windows XP using the windows media player it would play this file from beginning to end with no interruption. The entire dvd clip would be played. The same can be said for VTS_01_2.VOB, they are the same clip, identical.

If I were to attempt this using the VLC player, the clip stops playing about 90% of the way, I would then have to open VTS_01_2.VOB to watch the rest of the clip (the last 10% of the clip). Neither of the VOB files play the entire clip in it's entirety on VLC but using windows media player on windows XP both VOB files play the clip in full (the two VOB files play the identical clip in full which makes this even more confusing) This has me very frustrated. Why are there even two VOB files at all? And why will windows media player play BOTH of these files as a full clip and VLC player will not. It's not because of chapter breaks because there are 6 chapters in this file, so VLC not playing this as a continuous file because of chapters isn't the problem. Does anyone have an idea of what the issue may be? I tried looking through the preferences section of the VLC player and couldn't find a setting that related to the problem I'm having.

Thanks in advance. Well, WMP is doing stuff here, which isn't obvious to the ordinary user. In fact, you content is spread across all these vob files and WMP will do the file handling transparently, so you never notice when a file ends or begins. When using individual files within VLC, it will play them individually without looking for related vob files. However, there is a separate mode, which lets you do that. Go to the 'Open Disk' dialog and choose the folder containing the vob files with the 'Open VIDEO_TS folder' feature. This way, VLC will treat the folder as a DVD and will perform as expected.

For commercial DVDs, just open the disk as is.

I was surprised to learn that QuickTime 7 (at least in Tiger) has the ability to open and display VOB ( Video OBject, ) files found on DVDs. These can also reside on your hard drive if, for example, you use a DVD authoring system such as DVD Studio Pro. This enables one to preview VOB files within the Finder, a very welcome change, indeed. This new capability extends also to encrypted (including commercial) DVDs.

VOB files are muxed, meaning they contain both video and audio streams. For now, QuickTime simply displays the video information, leaving the sound stream inaudbile both in QuickTime Player and the Finder preview.
